Jeremy David Detscher

BA Professional Dance '17

It has been five years since you graduated from the Palucca 日博体育 für Tanz Dresden. What have you been up to over the last years?
First, it feels like a long time already that I have been visiting the Palucca University. Many things happened in that 5 years, professionally but also in my personal growth.

After my graduation in summer 2016 I joined the Dance Ensemble of the Gerhart Hauptmann Theatre in G?rlitz, Germany. I stayed there for 2 seasons where I had the chance to work with guest choreographers such as Adi Salant or Noa Zuk and Ohad Fishof. After that I took a little time off and travelled to India, which was an amazing experience. I moved back to Dresden and started doing projects and auditioned for companies. As it’s known that it is a very competitive field in the dance world, I decided in summer 2019 to study again at a University. I felt like I needed a bit distance to dancing. But I realized quickly that without dancing it is not possible for me as well. Covid started in the beginning of 2020, so the University went totally into digital mode, which was not an option for me to continue plus I wanted to dance again. I moved back to Dresden and started doing projects in Dresden again. I’ve done several projects with my sisters, Chiara and Seraphine, who are also dancers.

Currently I’m living Berlin. I chose to come here since the dance scene is very exciting to me and I’m looking forward to do projects here. On the side I study Cultural and Social Science at the Humboldt University Berlin. Since January 2022 I have also been working for the Dachverband Tanz part-time.

How has the Palucca University of Dance Dresden – and its network and community – helped you in the career path you have chosen as an artist?
The University prepared me technically very well for the dance world. I always felt I have a big advantage that I had been educated both in Ballet and Contemporary Dance equally. I could feel that especially in auditions. But also the education in Improvisation, which is the most interesting field for me as an dance artist, was very helpful in defining my strengths.

Looking back at your time at the university, what are some of your fondest memories?
As a Dancer speaking, I really enjoyed the Gaga Dance Workshops we had in the last Bachelor year. It shaped, and still shapes me as an dance artist. I felt immediately connected to that movement language. I also loved the end year performances in the Semoperper Dresden. It was a great feeling dancing on such a big stage.
And personally I really enjoyed the Biennale Week in Cologne, where we met other dancers from different schools in Germany. It felt like such an enrichment to exchange with becoming dancers also outside your own university.

If you could go back in time, what would you tell your younger self on your first day at Palucca?
Dance is not everything! Try to stick to your authentic and true personality.

Is there any piece of advice you would like to share with our current students and fresh graduates?
Especially the last year of the Bachelor Programme can be really stressful. Training, auditions, performances, rehearsals and the bachelor work come all together in that year. The most present for me was to get a job immediately after my graduation. My advice is, there are so many other opportunities to dance than just dancing in the big companies with a fixed contract. Of course you expect something after such a hard education, but my point is, don’t panic if you don’t get a fixed job immediately. There are many ways to be successful as an dance-artist.
